Native Valve Endocarditis due to Non-Toxigenic Strain of Corynebacterium diphtheria in a Child: Case Report and Review of Literature

Corynebacterium diphtheria, the causative agent of diphtheria, is an uncommon cause of infective endocarditis. Although the incidence is low, the non- toxigenic (NT) strains of C. diphtheria are being increasingly reported to be associated with endocarditis due to their aggressive and destructive nature with high rates of associated morbidity and mortality. We here in report a case of native valve endocarditis of the aortic valve in a 9 year old female child caused by non-toxigenic strain of C. diphtheriae biotype mitis.
